“The story of the growth of God’s kingdom is thrilling in all its aspects, and to have this brief summary available in book form will surely aid us in the assurance that absolutely nothing can prevent King Jesus from fulfilling His purpose in building His church. Thrilling to read.” — Derek W. H. Church History 101 The Highlights of Twenty Centuries edition by Sinclair B Ferguson Joel R Beeke Michael A G Haykin Religion Spirituality eBooks

This book is exactly as advertised: An extremely short, extremely condensed, overview of Church History. It only hits the highest of the high points and refers the reader elsewhere for anything else.

Think of it as, "The Cliff's Notes version of the Cliff Notes".

So if you're new to Church History, this is a good, quick starting point to get the grand arc of Church History, but you'll need to go elsewhere to find a more complete, nuanced, and fully analyzed view.

I would recommend Bruce L. Shelley's Church History in Plain Language: Fourth Edition.

Church History 101 The Highlights of Twenty Centuries edition by Sinclair B Ferguson Joel R Beeke Michael A G Haykin Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I wanted something simple and short to reference in my biblical studies. This is my book. It has been added to my book of tools.
Short is an understatement. Brief. Quick. Little paragraph summaries. Might be good for an elemenart grade reader.
This is a good primer on every century of church history. Too often Christians are ignorant of the work of the Holy Spirit in the ages before them, the development of theology, and the growth of the church. Get this book. Read this book. And then dig deeper into church history.
Really short. The book is tiny - a bit bigger than a deck of cards. You can read it in 30 minutes. More importantly, it's just a reprint of articles from the Reformation Heritage KJV Study Bible. There's nothing new here. Due to its concise nature - only three or four pages per chapter - very little is covered. Gonzalez's overview is a better pick.
This is a great intro to Church History which will serve to pique your interest in particular centuries to study more in depth. It is both difficult and encouraging to read about our brothers and sisters throughout the ages as they failed, and subsequently the Lord prevailed, showing that the work of the Church is not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of the Lord.
I expected a comprehensive look at church history. But it's actually just a collection of short essays, given by one person, from a Reformed viewpoint, or at least in some fashion. It's helpful to understand some of the main issues facing the church in each Century. This book is a thumbnail sketch of *some*of those events. But it is far from a complete survey of church history. I would go so far as to say it might even be a little academically irresponsible to publish a book such as this, the title promising something it isn't. The criticisms of church history present in the book from the Reformed view probably are not bad ones, (though they lack nuance, certainly). But I would criticize the book for being too simplistic, essentially, "this is all you need to know about church history." If I were a Reformed academic, I don't think I'd be recommending this book for a course of the same name.
Because I have far too many books in my library, I often take a deep breath before embarking on any book that is more than 200 pages long just in case it ends up not being worth my time investment. One thing I've never really read about is church history and I dread having to read some 500-1000 page book on this, so I'm really thankful that this 100-ish page of super-summarised version of church history was published. There's no way we could get much more than a tiny itty-bitty little glimpse of church history (c'mon, this is 2000 years of history in 100+ pages!), but it's enough of a "bullet point" summary of church history that one can further explore in bigger volumes out there. It's a good "entree" for church history. But note because of the brevity, there may be bits and pieces that may be confusing because it's so short the authors couldn't expand more on it and make this a 500+ page book - and that is not the purpose of this book. Great very high-level overview that will whet your appetite for more, should you desire to understand the history of your - or any - church.
