Reza's job has put her in the face of every kind of death. Thanks to her guns, her car, and her dapper style, she came through the Bad Years alive, but since losing Angie things haven't been right. Tonight's job threatens to bring the worst terrors of that time skittering back to life."Anyway Angie" is a new urban fantasy story with more than a touch of horror from rising star Daniel José Older, set in the world of his upcoming Bone Street Rumba series.

I first read (and adored) Half-Resurrection Blues, so I was thrilled to start reading this short, set in the same world. The short is wonderful and wonderfully creepy, but the end while somewhat satisfying drove me nuts in what was left unfinished. I'm hoping that Reza and Charo will make more appearances in DJ Older's series.

You may want to read this during the light of day, long before you plan on going to sleep. Daniel José Older has a great sense of imagery and this short is chock full of creepy, icky descriptions that could possibly encourage gaggin and/or vomiting. Poetic and agressive, Anyway: Angie is deliciously dark love story gone awry.

UPDATE: The characters here do go on to play important roles in the Bone Street Rumba Trilogy, so if you intend to read the novels the shorts Anyway: Angie and Gio and Kia are recommended to read between the first and second books.

Anyway Angie A TorCom Original Bone Street Rumba eBook Daniel José Older Reviews

Angie's essence permeates every aspect of this story. Instead of going for cheap creeps, the author invests the reader in the love of Angie, thereby letting us cosign things we certainly would never do ourselves. The result is a story that is as heartbreaking as it is skin crawling. The author's attention to detail lends itself not only to the exquisitely gruesome, but to the morosely mundane in a way that makes me feel like I have not read the story, but visited the places it describes. Older is a master of creating scenes and weaving them into unforgettable stories.
A stylish noir story with the unusual voice of a lesbian bodyguard for an escort service encountering a serial killer of the multi-legged variety. Dark and creepy, but with a great protagonist and intriguing ending. I'm looking forward to the novel!
Reza is a lesbian driver for an "escort service." Her job is to drive the girls to their johns and provide muscle if there is a problem. A few months before the story opens, Reza's lover, Angie, disappeared on a job where Reza was the driver, and this disappearance haunts Angie. Tonight, she is taking another girl on a job, and it turns out bad. The girl goes missing, and there seem to be insect like things involved.

The story didn't work for me. There were references to the Bad Years and why Reza goes heavily armed, but we aren't told what the Bad Years were or how they affected society, which seems to have moved along with cell phones, cars and escort services. Reza is not surprised by the insects, but we don't get an explanation about why this is the case or what they are. We don't really draw a bead on the decision of her boss to fold up the illegal side of his business to do battle with the evil powers of the world.

I suspect that this story sets up a novel or longer story where the background is provided. Without that background, this story just seemed confusing. Since neither the characters or the background grabbed my interest or sympathy, I'm not sure that I'm interested in reading the longer story based on what I've seen here.
This was an interesting peek into Older's Bone Street Rumba universe and I absolutely love the author's writing style. This makes me even more excited for Half Resurrection Blues.
Hauntingly beautiful love story and horror. The characters are quirky yet hard, I rooted for them!
This is a must read for demanding urban fantasy fans.
3.5/5 stars. "Anyway Angie" is the story of two people brought together and turned into warriors by shared grief and anger. The "big bad" was creepy and strange, something I won't forget for a while. I understand this serves as a prequel to a new series and I'm very much looking forward to it.
Other people are going to talk about the creepy and gross parts, and yes, they are there and yes, they are great. For me, however, the best part of this story is the main character, Reza. Older does that special trick of the very talented where he hits on all the standard buttons to telegraph "noir hero", but at the same time creates a wonderfully original character. As a lover of genre and pulp, I was satisfied, and as a lover of the unique and distinctive, I was thrilled.

This isn't a simple matter of gender-bending. Read the story for yourself and you'll know what I mean. Older here is showing the sort of talent for character creation that I love in Elmore Leonard and Jim Thompson novels.

I look forward to reading more from this writer.
